The River Nith stands as a constant in Dumfries and Galloway, threading through the region. It carries time in its current, memory in its mud, and meaning in the lives shaped along its banks. The Nith is no passive presence; it is a living seam, connecting people to place and practice to meaning. A Rich Seam encapsulates the Nith’s enduring influence. Through the camera lens, sixteen individuals, grounded in land-based work, are brought into focus, reflecting the river’s impact across generations. Many work closely with the landscape’s natural elements - its enduring stone, surrounding woodland, and the flowing water. Their paths are distinct, yet the river intertwines them, stitching their stories together through inspiration, labour and land. In tones of deep greens, earth browns, and burnt orange, the photographs reflect the resilience and spirit of the landscape. This palette captures the textures of land and water in each frame, evoking the vitality that persists through seasons and time. These images reveal quiet yet powerful moments of connection; hands crafting, bodies moving, people sharing. They invite you to slip beneath the river’s surface, to meet some of the lives carried along its seventy-mile course. Each practice reflected is a practice carried out with care, not only for material and methods but for community, culture and the land itself. Central to this exhibition is the belief that the River Nith belongs to no one, and yet, to everyone. It lives in those who behold it, work alongside it, care for it, and draw meaning from it. The Nith stores stories, skills, and memories, harbours knowledge handed down through generations and has borne witness to new ways of working and being. As a seam, it threads people and practices together, weaving a living tapestry of local life and labour. This is not a story of nostalgia, but a reflection of both continuity and change. It is a tale of enduring connection shaped by time, nature, and care. Across centuries of transformation, the Nith has remained, and will always remain, a rich seam of inspiration.
